This former mountain farm, first mentioned in historical records in 1581, has long been a welcome stop for travellers seeking refreshments. For the last four generations, it has been in the hands of the Raffeiner family. At the Oberraindlhof, guests can savour traditional Schnalstal cuisine with a modern twist. From hearty pasta dishes and “Mamenbert” cheese sourced from the nearby Pfossental valley to risotto with speck and apple from Schnals or original Schnals pasta made from rye flour and quark, every dish is a delight for gourmets and food lovers alike. These local specialities can be enjoyed in the rustic, cosy “Zirmstuben” dining room, dating back to 1862, or in the spacious winter garden.

Excursions destinations

Monastery village

Nestled at 1,300 metres above sea level, the tranquil village of Karthaus is accessible via the “Via Monachorum” trail. The village sprang up around the Allerengelberg Carthusian Monastery, founded in 1326, and the restored monastery building now hosts art exhibitions. Visitors can also find peace in the meditative herb garden. A historical walking tour with twelve stations guides visitors through the rich history of the village. The “Via Monachorum” trail leads to the former monastery from several directions.

Archeoparc in Schnals

The Archeoparc in the village of Unsere Frau can be reached on foot from the Oberraindlhof via a 60-minute pilgrimage trail, or by car in just 4 minutes. This archaeological open-air museum is dedicated to the Copper Age glacier mummy Ötzi. The museum features realistic reconstructions of houses from the Stone Age in the outdoor area and exhibits of Ötzi’s clothing, weapons and tools inside. Aside from the hour-long walk there and back, plan to spend 3-4 hours exploring the museum, including participation in the activities.

Iceman Ötzi Peak viewing platform

The glacier cable car to the viewing platform at 3,251 m above sea level departs from Kurzras. At the top, you’ll find the Glacier Hotel Grawand, Europe’s highest hotel. From the station, a short 10-minute walk over rugged terrain and up a steel staircase leads to the viewing platform atop Grawand peak. From there, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the Ötztal Alps and Similaun mountain, stretching 3,606 metres above sea level – the very place where Ötzi, the glacier mummy, was discovered.
