More information Opening hoursNext to the entrance of the Gassenwirt Hotel and Restaurant, a sign proudly declares: “Food and drink since 1602”. This historic establishment, located in the sunny village of Kiens, has been lovingly maintained by the Falkensteiner family since 1923. Specialising in authentic Pustertal cuisine, the restaurant offers a menu brimming with regional dishes – the signature pressed dumplings taking centre stage in a variety of forms year-round. Guests can savour these culinary delights in the charming dining room, the traditional “Veneranda”, or the cosy, wood-panelled “Bruno-Stube”. Blending the classic with the contemporary, the Gassenwirt merges tradition with innovation. Visitors can also enjoy guided tours of the in-house grain mill, the herb and vegetable garden and the mountain pine oil distillery.

Lake Issinger Weiher
This hike begins by following the narrow gorge of the Grünbach stream before ascending to Schöneck Castle. From there, you follow a historic pilgrims’ path to a Gothic church, the Kirchlein von Hasenried. The route continues along the “Pfaffensteig” trail to Pfalzen, where a hiking trail leads from the sports field toward Irenberg and the idyllic Lake Issinger Weiher, a true natural gem. Along the final section of the route, you can enjoy a visit to a mountain pine oil distillery and take a rest in the fragrant coolness near the Grünbach stream.

Duration: 3h 30m
Distance: 11km
Elevation difference: 380m
Putzenhöhe summit hike
From the Gelenke car park above Hofern near Kiens, take the “Murmeltierweg” (marmot trail) no. 65, which ascends gently to the Moarhofalm mountain hut. As you climb higher, you’ll see marmots playing in the Alpine meadows. Continue upward to the picturesque Lake Grünbachsee, nestled in a hollow, where you can take a break. From there, follow a well-marked path to the summit of Putzenhöhe mountain, where you can admire the sweeping views of the Zillertal Alps and the Dolomites from beside the wooden summit cross. Retrace your steps for the return journey.
Starting point: Gelenke car park
Duration: 5h
Distance: 11,4km
Elevation difference: 850m
Roman trail
Starting directly from the Gassenwirt Hotel and Restaurant, the route leads along the cycle path to the so-called “Roman trail”. This path passes by traces of Roman history and leads through a peaceful mixed forest. Upon reaching the first houses of the quiet village of Ehrenburg, you may choose to take a detour to the Parish Church of Maria Himmelfahrt, situated on a hill. Continue along the small road branching off Zum Römerstein to the Ehrenburg Milestone, an ancient Roman marker indicating the distance to the Roman town of Aguntum. Information boards explain the inscriptions on the milestone. The Roman trail then merges with the cycle path, which will guide you back to the starting point.

Duration: 1h
