For fifth generations, the women of the Oberkofler family have managed the hotel and restaurant, placing a strong emphasis on blending gastronomy with agriculture. They take pride in using seasonal produce from their own farm and meat from animals they raise themselves. Their approach has earned them recognition: the Zum Hirschen is one of only twelve establishments in South Tyrol to receive the “GSTC” certificate and the prestigious Michelin Green Star 2022 for sustainable cooking and management. Guests can enjoy farm-raised meat specialities and dishes made from high-quality local ingredients, all prepared with innovative and creative flair.
The host family
Now in its fifth generation, the Oberkofler women – sisters Maria, Petra and Ulrike, along with their mother Maria Luise – run the business with great dedication. Each brings her own unique ideas to the table. Meanwhile, son Georg manage the farm and care for the animals.

The Avia – Lumberjack Trail stretches 10 kilometres from Jenesien to “Halbweg” in the Sarntal valley. This trail retraces the path of lumberjacks through the forested high plateau, passing several interactive stations along the way. After a brief descent, the trail climbs back up to the village of Afing before descending steadily into the valley, reaching “Halbweg” on the Sarntaler Straße road. You can catch a bus to Bolzano from there.
