The Mitterwirt, on the village square of St. Martin, was first mentioned in historical records in the 17th century. In the parlour, where Bavarian authorities once conducted interrogations during the Tyrolean uprising, the Fontana family now serves down-to-earth South Tyrolean cuisine and classic Passeiertal specialities. Once a favourite haunt of local hero Andreas Hofer, this inn remains the village’s gathering place, with its old-world atmosphere lovingly maintained. Guests dine in a parlour with traditional Passeiertal farmhouse panelling and a wood stove that is still fed by hand. The menu focuses on timeless dishes, reimagined with distinctive flair – particularly the beetroot dumplings and braised goat, both local favourites.

The host family

gastgeber-lamm

The Fontana family – Arnold, his wife Hildegard and their sons Thomas and Alexander – run the Lamm “Mitterwirt” Inn and Restaurant. Hildegard, a Passeiertal trailblazer, became the first female chef in the region to earn a toque and 13 points from Gault Millau. The family places a strong emphasis on sourcing local agricultural products and using them responsibly in their cuisine.
